Hoodia gordonii, a cactus look-alike plant which is actually a succulent was first discovered some 27,000 years ago by South Africa's San people who have been living off the land for more than 100,000 years. To the San hoodia was no ordinary plant. For them hoodia is their food, medicine and at times even water. It was what they relied on to keep them alive during long hunting trips as they chewed the stems of the bitter plant to suppress hunger and thirst. Hoodia was also used for many ailments ranging from diabetes to hypertension to upset stomach and hangovers. The recent ban on ephedra weight loss products from the market has created the need for a new generation of safe weight loss pills. With the growing recognition as a possible "miracle obesity cure" Hoodia appears set to fill the void. In the United States alone there are over 50 million clinically obese people and in developing countries around the world obesity continues to spiral out of control.

The hoodia gordonii plant looks like an ordinary cactus with thin, thorny fingers but it is actually a succulent that grows about 20 inches tall in the reddish sands of southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert. Its potential application as a weight loss aide became apparent in the mid 1960s when the first scientific investigation of the hoodia plant was conducted by South Africa’s national laboratory and it was confirmed that the indigenous Bushmen were right all along. They found that animals fed hoodia gordonii actually lost weight.

It took the South African government scientists another 30 years to isolate and identify the hunger-suppressing component in hoodia. After finding it they named it P57, applied for a patent and licensed it to Phytopharm. Phytopharm has since spent millions on research and clinical trials, one of which involved obese volunteers that yielded very promising results. In that study subjects given hoodia ate on average 1,000 calories less per day (after 15 days on hoodia) than those in the control group who were not given hoodia. Considering the average person consumes 2,000 plus calories a day this was a remarkable success.
